This Week in Pioneer Sports

Women’s Lacrosse
The Sacred Heart women’s lacrosse team will face off against Yale University on Wednesday, February 26th at 4:00 p.m. The Pioneers look to bounce back from a 19-6 loss in their 2014 season opener against Brown University. Sacred Heart did have contribution from Jenna Liljeberg (Wrentham, Mass.) who scored twice, while Caitlin Delaney (Cherry Hill, N.J.) and Jesslyn Joseph (Bolton, Mass.) each had a goal and an assist. Yale won the last matchup (15-9) on March 12, 2013.

 

Men’s Track and Field
The Sacred Heart men’s track and field team will compete at the New England Intercollegiate Indoor Track & Field Championships at Boston University on Friday, February 28th and Saturday, March 1st. The Pioneers competed at USA Track and Field NEC Championships on Sunday, February 23rd in which junior Adam King (Columbia, CT) won the high jump with a 6’4” leap. Drayke Jackson (East Northport, N.Y.) had couple top-five finishes, placing third in the 60 meter hurdles (8.72s) and fifth in the pole vault (12’11.5”).

 

Women’s Track and Field
The Sacred Heart men’s track and field team will compete at the New England Intercollegiate Indoor Track & Field Championships at Boston University on Friday, February 28th and Saturday, March 1st. The Pioneers competed at USA Track and Field NEC Championships on Sunday, February 23rd in which senior Kolbi Smith (Valatie N.Y.) won the shot put with a 43’3.75” throw. Nicole Bartosch (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) was also third in the long jump with a leap of 17’6.5”.

 

Softball
The Sacred Heart softball team will open the season at the UC Riverside Tournament against California on Friday, February 28th at 11:30 a.m. The Pioneers finished last season with 24-30 record and look to start this season on a high note. SHU will play its second game of the day against host school UC Riverside at 2:00 p.m.

Sacred Heart will continue the UC Riverside Tournament against UC Riverside on Saturday, March 1st at 2:00 p.m. and against Loyola on Sunday, March 2nd at 9:00 a.m.

 

Baseball
The Sacred Heart baseball team will open the season with a three game series against Tulane on Friday, February 28th at 6:30 p.m. The Pioneers ended the season with a (34-24) record and an impressive 23-9 record in the Northeast Conference. Sacred Heart made it to the NEC Championship series, but fell to Bryant University 6-3 and 8-0. Sacred Heart will play the second game of the series on Saturday, March 1st at 2:00 p.m. and the series closer on Sunday at 1:00pm.

 

Men’s Volleyball
The Sacred Heart men’s volleyball team will compete in the Coker Tournament playing their first match against Lees-McRae on Saturday, March 1st at 12:30 p.m. The Pioneers are currently on a two-match losing streak with losses to conference opponents Penn. State and Saint Francis U. In their last match up against Saint Francis U, Austin Arcala (Long Beach, Calif.) led all players with 22 kills, while setter R.J. Uhlir (Norfolk, Neb.) recorded 50 assist. The Pioneers will continue the Coker Tournament on Saturday, March 1st at 4:30 p.m. against Erskine and Sunday, March 2nd against Coker at 12:00 p.m. and Pfeiffer at 2:00 p.m.

 

Men’s Lacrosse
The Sacred Heart men’s lacrosse team will play in the Patriot Cup at Ford Stadium in Dallas, Texas against Dartmouth on Saturday, March 1st at 1:00 p.m. The Pioneers dropped the first two game of the season to Binghamton (8-6) and High Point (12-10). Midfielders Alex Miller (Ridgewood N.J.) and Brian Masi (Smithtown, N.Y.) each had hat tricks for the Pioneers against Binghamton. Sacred Heart looks to get into the win column this weekend against Dartmouth.
