This Week in Pioneer Sports

Women’s Golf
The Sacred Heart women’s golf team will continue the Middleburg Bank Intercollegiate on Tuesday, March 18th. After the first day of the competition, Sacred Heart was tied for 7th place out of 13 teams. Senior Jennifer Clinton (Sayville, N.Y.) led her team with a tie for 12th place on the individual leader board.  She had the Pioneers lowest round of the day with 78 on the par-72 course in the first round.

 

Baseball
The Sacred Heart baseball team will play at Rhode Island on Tuesday, March 18th at 3:30 p.m. The Pioneers are currently .500 on the road (5-5) and 5-7 overall. Sacred took two out of three games in their series at Fordham this past weekend. Catcher Dan Perez (Seymour, CT) had two hits, a run, and an RBI during game 1 of the series, while Nick Leiningen (Millwood, N.Y) earned the win in Sacred Heart’s 6-0 shutout victory in game 2. Sacred Heart will travel to play in-state rival Quinnipiac on Thursday, March 20th at 3:00 p.m. The Pioneers will also play two doubleheaders this weekend against Cornell on Saturday, March 22nd (12:00 p.m., 2:30 p.m.) and Sunday, March 23rd (11:00 p.m., 1:30 p.m.) at home.

Women’s Fencing
The Sacred Heart women’s fencing team will end of the season at the NCAA Championships in Columbus, Ohio. The women’s and men’s fencing team had a record five fencers qualify for the NCAA Fencing Championship after competing at the Northeast Regionals this past weekend. Megan Floyd (Media, PA) qualified for the NCAA Championships for the second year in a row. The Pioneers will begin competition Thursday March 20th.

 

Men’s Fencing
The Sacred Heart women’s fencing team will end of the season at the NCAA Championships in Columbus, Ohio. The women’s and men’s fencing team had a record five fencers qualify for the NCAA Fencing Championship after competing at the Northeast Regionals this past weekend.  Epee fencers Jonathan Jacovino (Brownfield, ME) and Devon Clark (Teaneck, N.J.) were two of the Pioneers who qualified. The Pioneers will start competition Saturday, March 22nd.

           

Women’s Lacrosse
The Sacred Heart women’s lacrosse team will play against Manhattan at Campus Field on Wednesday, March 19th at 3:00 p.m. The Pioneers are coming off a 20-3 blowout loss at Vermont on Saturday. Sacred Heart did get good production from goalkeeper Kelly Keenan (Wantagh, N.Y.), who had 10 saves and six ground balls. Sacred Heart will also play at Monmouth on Saturday, March 22nd at 1:00 p.m.

 

Men’s Volleyball
The Sacred Heart men’s volleyball team will play UPR on Thursday, March 20th at 5:00 p.m. The Pioneers are currently on a three game losing streak, falling most recently to NJIT 3-2. Both Enzo Mackenzie (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and Brad Borsay (Richmond, R.I.) recorded double-doubles against NJIT. Mackenzie recorded 16 kills and 12 digs, while Borsay had 15 kills and 11 digs. Sacred Heart hopes to bounce back after losing seven out of their last nine games.

 

Softball
The Sacred Heart softball team will play against Bowling Green at the UMBC Classic on Friday, March 21st at 10:15 a.m. The Pioneers lost their last two matchups against Stony Brook (4-3, 4-3) and are 5-7 overall. Sacred Heart will continue the UMBC Classic against UMBC 12:30 p.m. and against Saint Peter’s on Saturday, March 22nd at 3:45 p.m. and Sunday, March 23rd at 11:15 a.m.

 

Men’s Tennis
The Sacred Heart men’s tennis team will face off against Robert Morris on Friday, March 21st at 1:30 p.m. The Pioneers were shutout in their last match against Boston College (7-0). Kevin Budrawich (New Canaan, Conn.) and Justin Pagan (Flushing, N.Y.) won 8-5 in a doubles match, giving Sacred Heart its only victory of the day. The Pioneers are 1-3 in the month of March and look to get on a roll against the Colonials. Sacred Heart will also play at Fairleigh Dickinson on Saturday, March 22nd at 11:00 a.m. and Monmouth on Sunday, March 23rd at 2:00 p.m.  

 

Women’s Tennis
The Sacred Heart women’s tennis team will face off against Robert Morris on Friday, March 21st at 1:30 p.m. The Pioneers were shutout in their last match against Hawaii (7-0). Freshman Taylor Gurda (Middletown, N.Y.) hung tough with Hawaii’s Rebecca Faltusz in singles, but fell 6-4, 6-4. Sacred Heart will also play at Fairleigh Dickinson on Saturday, March 22nd at 11:00 a.m.

 

Men’s Lacrosse
The Sacred Heart men’s lacrosse team will play at Vermont on Saturday, March 22nd at 1:00 p.m. The Pioneers are coming off a 12-10 loss to Hartford on March 15th. Mike Mawdsley (Innisfil, Ontario.) and Alex Dodge (Smithtown, N.Y.) had three goals and an assist each, while defenseman Andrew Newbold (Loveland, Ohio) had three forced turnovers. With a 1-5 record, Sacred Heart looks to improve on their poor start against Vermont.
