The Sacred Heart softball team will play a doubleheader against La Salle at the Rebel Games in Winter Haven, Florida Tuesday afternoon. The Pioneers began the season 0-2, dropping their first two games to UC Riverside. Nicole Deissler (Commack, N.Y.) gave Sacred Heart some production with a solo homerun in the bottom of the third of the first matchup..
The Pioneers will continue the Rebel games against Temple
University on Wednesday, March 5th at 10:00 a.m. and
against Niagara at 12:00 p.m. Sacred Heart will play Akron on
Friday, March 7th at 10:00 a.m. and Temple at 12:00 p.m.
They will finish off the Rebel Games against Saint Peter’s
10:00 a.m. and Utah Valley at 2:00 p.m.
The Sacred Heart baseball team will play at Nicholls State on Tuesday, March 4th at 6:00 p.m. The Pioneers took two out of three from Tulane to open the season. Sacred Heart won ther series closer 6-4, with pitcher Dan Wertz (Crossriver, N.Y.) earning the win, allowing just one run in 3.2 innings out the bullpen. The Pioneers will also play at LSU on Wednesday, March 5th at 6:30 p.m. And will begin a three game series at Southeast Louisiana on Friday, March 7th through Sunday, March 9th.
The Sacred Heart women’s tennis team will play BYU-Hawaii on Wednesday, March 4th at 7:00 p.m. The Pioneers are coming off a 5-2 win against Saint Francis University on February 22nd. Nicole Ryzdzewski (Maspeth, NY) won her singles match in straight sets (6-3, 6-3), while Taylor Gurda (Middletown, NY) did the same (6-1, 6-1). With a 3-3 record this season, the Pioneers look to be above .500 with a win on Wednesday. The Pioneers will also play Idaho at University of Hawaii on Thursday, March 6th at 3:00 p.m.
Sacred Heart women’s lacrosse will travel to DeLand, Florida to play Holy Cross on Wednesday. The Pioneers dropped their first two games of the season, most recently against Yale University (16-5). Sacred Heart did get production from Shelby Vaccaro, (Brightwaters, N.Y.) who led the team with two goals and an assist. The Pioneers will square off against Holy Cross on Wednesday, March 5th at 1:00 p.m. and Stenson on Saturday, March 8th at 1:00 p.m.
Men’s Track and Field
The Sacred Heart men’s track and field team will compete in the ECAC/IC4A Indoor Track & Field Championship at Boston University on Friday, March 7th through Sunday, March 9th. The Pioneers last competed at the New England Intercollegiate Indoor Track & Field Championships this past weekend and finished 8th out of 37 teams, racking up 26 points. Sophomore Sean Ferguson (Smithtown, N.Y.) won the 5000m while breaking the school record.
Women’s Track and Field
The Sacred Heart women’s track and field team will compete in the ECAC/IC4A Indoor Track & Field Championship at Boston University on Friday, March 7th through Sunday, March 9th. The Pioneers last competed at the New England Intercollegiate Indoor Track & Field Championships this past weekend and finished 4th out of 36 teams, racking up 46 points. Senior Kolbi Smith (Valatie, N.Y.) won the shot put with a 48’6” toss and Elizabeth Hutchins (Pawcatuck, Conn.) placed second in the 5000m with a 16:57.35 run.
The Sacred Heart men’s volleyball team will play at Princeton on Friday, March 7th at 7:00 p.m. The Pioneers are coming off two straight wins at on the last day of the Coker Tournament this past weekend against Coker (3-1) and Pfeiffer (3-0). Enzo Mackenzie (Rio De Janeiro, Brazil) led the team with 18 points against Coker and Christopher Delucie (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) also had 18 points against Pfeiffer. The Pioneers will also play at George Mason on Saturday, May 8th at 4:00 p.m,
The Sacred Heart women’s fencing team will compete in the NCAA Northeast Regionals on Sunday, March 9th at Wellesley College. The Pioneers are running high after at first place finish in last week’s NEIFC Tournament. Sacred Heart got a lot of help from freshmen Julia Greene (Califon, N.J.) and Taylor Walsh (Carlsbad, CA). Greene and Walsh tied for first place in the saber. The Pioneers were able to qualify nine fencers, as they compete in the regionals this weekend.
The Sacred Heart men’s fencing team will compete in the NCAA Northeast Regionals on Sunday, March 9th at Wellesley College. The Pioneers placed third in the NEIFC Tournament last week. Sacred Heart got strong performances from Jonathan Jacovino (Brownfield, ME), who was 3-0 in epee, and Joseph Faccio (Commack, N.Y.), who was 2-0 in foil. The Pioneers impressively qualified the maximum 10 fencers for the Northeast Regionals.
The Sacred Heart wrestling team will compete at the Eastern
Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) Championships this
coming weekend in the historic Palestra Gymnasium on the campus of
the University of Pennsylvania. Sacred Heart will be one of 18
teams competing for the EIWA Championship. The Pioneers have won
three dual matches this season and will look to cap off their
improved season with a nice showing in Philadelphia. The Pioneers
have finished 14th in the past two conference championship meets.
