Fairfield County blends the quaint antiques shops of New England with the trendy boutiques of Manhattan. Upscale shopping in downtown Westport and Greenwich, Stamford's antiques emporiums, and the outlets and eclectic boutiques along South Norwalk's cobblestone streets, offer an exciting mix of opportunities for everyone.
In addition to its cultural and social activities, the region is also home to numerous Fortune 500 companies including General Electric, Xerox and Pitney Bowes. Along with Sacred Heart University, Fairfield County has three other four-year colleges within its borders as well as several community college campuses.
Local attractions include the New Canaan Nature Center, The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk, and the Stamford Museum and Nature Center. A best-kept secret is the Museum's observatory, where each Friday "lunatics" can enjoy viewing the moon, planets, and deep space objects through their 22-inch research telescope. Driving a bit further east to Bridgeport, just off Exit 47 off the Merritt Parkway, is The Discovery Museum, with over a hundred interactive exhibits and daily planetarium shows. Bridgeport also hosts Connecticut's only zoo, the Beardsley Zoo, where exhibits include Siberian Tigers, monkeys, and tortoises from the Galapagos Islands, and a slew of other reptiles and amphibians.
Nearby at the new Ballpark at Harbor Hard, catch some sports action with the Bridgeport Bluefish, the winningest baseball team in the five-year history of the Atlantic League. If you're not already a fan, you will be once you experience a game in this state-of-the-art ballpark. The Arena at Harbor Yard hosts the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, the National Hockey League affiliate of the New York Islanders, as well as numerous exhibits and concerts throughout the year.
Fairfield County is full of lodging choices, from popular hotel chains, historic bed and breakfasts, and country inns, many which offer weekend package rates and indoor pools, perfect for the kids. Westports hosts the Inn at National Hall where luminaries such as President Clinton and Barbra Streisand have stayed.
