(Fairfield, CT) - Sacred Heart Baseball head coach Nick Giaquinto has named Steve Tedesco, JJ Edwards, MJ Schifano, and Matt Fitton captains of the 2011 Pioneer Baseball team.
Tedesco, a fifth-year senior outfielder, hit .325 in 202 at-bats last year and is the top returner in runs (56) and stolen bases (17). A prime table-setter last year in the Pioneers' line-up, he reached base at a .403 clip thanks to 66 hits and good plate discipline, walking 25 times while striking just 18 times. He also clubbed five homeruns with 36 RBI. In a double-header sweep of Monmouth last May 14, he hit a walk-off homerun in the tenth inning of game two after singling in the winning run in the eighth inning of game one. Tedesco was a star wide-receiver on the Sacred Heart football team for four years before exhausting his eligibility this year, and holds six Sacred Heart records including receptions, touchdowns, and receiving yards.
Edwards, a corner infielder, hit .304 last season with an on-base percentage of .364 in 50 games. He only made three errors on the season while splitting time between first and third base for a fielding percentage of .967. He drove in the winning run in SHU's win with an eighth-inning triple in SHU's 5-4 win over Monmouth last year in the NEC Tournament opener.
Schifano, a slick-fielding infielder, posted a fielding-percentage of .937 while splitting time at second, shortstop, and third. He accumulated 101 assists and 47 putouts in 46 games, and hit .254 on the season.
Fitton, a 6-9 left-handed pitcher, appeared in 15 games and made three starts for a record of 4-3 on the season. He is a member of the Student Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC).
