(West Palm Beach, FL) - Sacred Heart split a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at the Palm Beach Challenge, falling 11-2 to the University of Rhode Island before rebounding with a 15-1 win over St. Bonaventure.
Matt Fitton (Lebanon, CT) pitched well in game one, throwing five scoreless innings before giving up a two run homerun to Kyle Borden. He struck out six without giving up a walk, while scattering six hits. URI ran away with the game with six runs in the sixth, three in the seventh, and two in the eighth.
In game two, the Pioneers pounded out 17 hits for 15 runs against the Bonnies. Rob Griffith (Lake Ronkonkoma, NY) led the way, going 4-4 with 3 RBI. Edwards added three hits to collect a total of five on the day. Steve Tedesco (Mission Viejo, CA), John Murphy (Seymour, CT), Hunter Phillips (Monroe, CT) each had two hits for SHU.
Kody Kirski (Waterbury, CT) pitched 4.1 innings in his collegiate debut, breezing through the first four by facing the minimum. After striking out three and yielding two hits, he issued back-to-back walks and was relieved by John Hermanson (Milford, CT). He earned the win with 3.2 innings of scoreless relief, striking out one with two walks and three hits.
The Pioneers return to action when they begin a four-game series at Southeastern Louisiana Friday afternoon at 1 p.m.
