(Bridgeport, CT) – The Long Island University Blackbirds swept the Sacred Heart Pioneer baseball team in a doubleheader 6-3 and 3-0 Saturday afternoon at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard.
In game one, LIU jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first on a double to right by Drew Walsh, then made it 3-0 in the second on an RBI double by Diego Perez and RBI single by Brad Greve.
After Molbury's single in the sixth made it 4-0 LIU, SHU rallied for three in the bottom of the inning when Dave Boisture (Highland Mills, NY) drove in two with a pinch-hit double to the right field wall. He then came home to score on an error, cutting the LIU lead to 4-3. The Blackbirds answered with a run in the eight on an RBI single by Albert Faz. They stole another run in the ninth when Tyler Jones got picked off but got in a rundown long enough to allow Sam Sciamarelli to score all the way from second.
LIU also jumped to a quick lead in game two, scoring all three of their runs in the first on a two-run single by Walsh and an RBI groundout by Molbury. Despite a 3-3 performance by JJ Edwards (Endwell, NY) the Pioneers were unable to score of LIU starter Matt McCormick. He tossed six scoreless innings for the shutout, allowing just five hits and no walks with a single strikeout.
John Hermanson (Milford, CT) continued his stretch of impressive pitching, throwing three shutout innings out of the bullpen with three strikeouts and just one hit allowed. Steve Tedesco (Mission Viejo, CA) extended his hitting streak to 12 games with a single in game one, but saw it come to an end in game two.
The Pioneers will look to return the favor, as they host the Blackbirds in another doubleheader Sunday afternoon beginning at 2:00 p.m.
