(Las Vegas, Nevada) – The Sacred Heart Pioneer Baseball team scored four runs in the fourth to win 6-3 against the UNLV Rebels in the first of a four-game series.
Trailing 3-1 in the fourth, SHU batted around to take a 5-3 lead. John Murphy (Seymour, CT) hit a groundball to second that went through the legs of Hunter Beaty for a run scoring error, cutting the deficit to a run. Conor McEvoy (Watertown, CT) followed with an infield single, one of his three hits in the game, to load the bases. SHU then tied the game on an RBI single by Derick Horn (Valatie, NY). MJ Schifano (Monroe, NY) walked with the bases loaded to force in the go-ahead run, followed by a sacrifice fly by Steve Tedesco (Mission Viejo, CA). The Pioneers added an insurance run in the seventh on an RBI groundout by JJ Edwards (Endwell, NY).
With two outs and a runner on in the eighth, Dave Boisture (Highland Mills, NY) prevented a UNLV rally by making a spectacular diving catch on a drive to right centerfield by Trent Cooke.
The Pioneers jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI groundout by Edwards, but UNLV tied it in the first on an RBI single by Cooke and then took the lead in the second on an RBI groundout by Danny Higa and an RBI double by Casey Sato.
Troy Scribner (Washington Depot, CT) earned the win with six innings of work, giving up three runs and seven hits. He pitched out of trouble a couple of times, stranding the bases loaded in both the fifth and sixth innings. Matt Fitton (Lebanon, CT) pitched two scoreless innings of relief, and Schifano moved from third to the mound to record his second save in the ninth with a scoreless inning after inheriting two runners. UNLV stranded 14 runners for the game.
