Murphy's 10th Inning Walk-Off Single Completes Doubleheader Sweep for Pioneers

(Bridgeport, CT) – John Murphy (Seymour, CT) knocked a game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the 10th as the Sacred Heart Pioneers came from behind for a walk-off 11-10 win, sweeping a doubleheader and a four game series with Fairleigh Dickenson.

Murphy knocked a 0-2 pitch into right centerfield to bring home Hunter Phillips, who led the inning off with a single.  Trailing 10-7 in the eighth, the Pioneers scored three times with two outs to force the tie.  MJ Schifano (Monroe, NY) drove in one with an RBI single to center, his fourth hit of the game, and Rob Griffith (Lake Ronkonkoma, NY) tied the game with a two-run single to left.

The lead changed four times in a back-and-forth game two, with FDU taking a 4-0 lead in the second on RBI doubles by Joe Martino and JT Sherba and a two-run single by Ryan Kresky.  SHU responded the next half-inning with four runs as well on an RBI triple by Conor McEvoy (Watertown, CT), a sacrifice fly by Derick Horn (Valatie, NY), and a two-out homerun to right by Schifano.

FDU went back on top in the third on another RBI double by Martino, then added another three in the fourth on an error, an sacrifice fly by Erik Pollag, and an RBI single by Eric Anderson.  However, the Pioneers matched that three run fourth in their half on an RBI single by JJ Edwards (Endwell, NY) and a two-run single by Murphy.  FDU increased their lead with two in the seventh on a two-run single by Jonathon Torres.

James Ineson (Milford, CT) came out of the bullpen to shut down the Knights over the final 3.2 innings, positioning the Pioneers for their comeback.  He allowed just one hit and no runs with a walk and two strikeouts for his first win.

Schifano finished 4-6 with three runs and three RBI, a triple away from hitting for the cycle for the second time this season.  Phillips, Griffith, and Murphy all collected three hits, while SHU pounded out 21 hits as team.

In game one, the Pioneers defeated the Knights 8-5.  SHU jumped to an early 3-0 lead in the first on a two-run double to left-center by Griffith and an RBI single by Murphy.  Matt Holsman put FDU on the board with an RBI single in the third, but the Pioneers countered on Murphy's RBI groundout also in the third.  The Pioneers added key insurance runs in the fourth on RBI single by Dave Boisture (Highland Mills, NY) and a two-run single by Edwards, and another in the fifth on an RBI double by Schifano.

Schifano earned the win, going 5.2 innings and scattering eight hits and three earned runs.  He also went 3-4 at the plate with two runs and an RBI, for a doubleheader total of 7-10 with five runs and four RBI.

The Pioneers are next in action at the University of Rhode Island Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
