(Bridgeport, CT) – MJ Schifano (Monroe, NY) drove in the game-winning run with an RBI single in the ninth, making a winner of Robbie Maguire (Brooklyn, NY) and earning the Sacred Heart Pioneers a doubleheader split with the Bryant Bulldogs with a 2-1 game two walk-off win.
Schifano drove a line-drive single to right centerfield, bringing home Steve Tedesco (Mission Viejo, CA), who led off the inning with a single. Maguire earned his second win with five shutout innings of relief. He allowed just two singles and struck out five, mixing all his pitches and particularly commanding a sharp curveball that kept the Bulldogs off balance.
Both teams scored in the first, with the Bulldogs jumping out to a 1-0 lead on an RBI single by Jordan English. Sacred Heart tied it when Schifano scored on a passed ball.
Nobody scored again until Schifano's game-winner thanks to plays at the plate on both sides. Tedesco was thrown out by English trying to score on a shallow fly to right in the second, an inning in which the Pioneers loaded the bases with no outs and did not score. JJ Edwards (Endwell, NY) returned the favor in the fourth, throwing out pinch runner Edward Rooney on a two-out single to left by Tim Norton, with a great diving tag by catcher Greg DePalma (Wantagh, NY) to end the inning and keep the game tied.
The Pioneers saw their nine-game Northeast Conference winning streak snapped in game one, a 3-0 win for Bryant. Peter Kelich shutout SHU on five hits with two walks and three strikeouts for the seven inning complete game victory. Bryant scored twice in the fourth on RBI singles by Mike DelPonte and Jamie Skagerlind and once again in the fifth on an RBI single by David Soltis.
Sacred Heart hosts Bryant in the finale of the four-game series Sunday at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard beginning at 6:30 p.m.
