(Bridgeport, CT) – The Sacred Heart Pioneer Baseball team lost 11-3 to the Manhattan Jaspers in their final non-conference game of the regular season Tuesday afternoon at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard.
Manhattan took an early 3-0 lead before the Pioneers could record an out in the first inning, with Mike Mike McCann delivering a two-run double with the bases loaded, followed by an RBI groundout by Austin Sheffield.
Chris Dionisio (Smithtown, NY) recovered nicely from that tough first, allowing just those three runs over 5.1 innings with five hits and four strikeouts. Liam Rafferty (Westminster, MA) and Nick Vig (Monroe, CT) both pitched scoreless innings of relief.
The Jaspers broke the game open with a six-run seventh inning. Mikey Miranda, Mark Onorati, and Austin Sheffield all had RBI singles and Chad Salem drove in two with a double. Onorati went 3-5 with two runs and an RBI.
The Pioneers scored twice in the seventh on an RBI groundout by Chris Whittemore (Lavellete, NJ) and an RBI double by Tyler Curry (South Salem, NY). Hunter Phillips (Monroe, NY) added another on a sacrifice fly in the eighth, but Kyle Murphy followed that with a long two-run homerun to left the next half-inning.
The Pioneers begin their final weekend series Thursday afternoon at Harbor Yard at 3:00 p.m., hosting Wagner in the first of a four-game series. The Pioneers will go into Thursday's conference action a half-game better than LIU for second place, and three games behind first-place Monmouth as they gear up for the NEC Baseball Tournament next weekend.
