(Bridgeport, CT) – The Sacred Heart Pioneers pounded 19 hits, including four by John Murphy (Seymour, CT), and Troy Scribner (Washington Depot, CT) won his sixth game in his last seven starts in a 12-7 win over Wagner Thursday afternoon.
The Pioneers led 6-0 after four innings, with two runs coming in the first on an RBI single by Murphy and an RBI double by Hunter Phillips (Monroe, CT). SHU scored four more in the fourth on RBI singles by Dan Perez (Seymour, CT) and MJ Schifano (Monroe, NY) and a two-run double by Steve Tedesco (Mission Viejo, CA).
Wagner cut the lead in half with a three-run fifth behind a two-run triple by Seth Boyd and an RBI single by Eddie Brown. John Lucas cut the Seahawks deficit to 6-4 in the seventh with an RBI single. However, Phillips delivered two runs for SHU with a two-out single to right in the seventh.
After Wagner got one back in the eighth on an RBI single by Gaby Ramirez, the Pioneers put the game away with a four-run eighth aided by three Wagner errors. Tedesco doubled in a run, with a second run scoring on the play on an error by right-fielder Kevin McDonnell on his throw back to the infield. He then dropped a fly ball by JJ Edwards (Endwell, NY) that would have been a sacrifice fly. Edwards came home on a steal of third and a throwing error by the catcher Ramirez trying to throw him out. The Seahawks added to win the ninth on a bases-loaded walk to Dave Pepe and a run-scoring groundout by Ian Miller.
Scribner pitched six innings, giving up three runs on ten hits with one walk and three strikeouts.
The second-place Pioneers improved to 20-9 in the NEC and 28-21 overall. Sacred Heart hosts Wagner in a doubleheader Friday afternoon at 12:00 p.m.
