(Fairfield, CT) – Hunter Phillips (Monroe, CT) was named Akadema Northeast Conference Player of the Week, while Nick Leiningen (Millwood, NY) was named Akadema Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week for the week ending May 15, 2011.
Phillips went 9-17 with 8 RBI and 4 runs in five games, including a non-conference game against Manhattan and four conference games against Wagner. In the four-game series sweep against the Seahawks, he went 9-15 with 3 runs and 7 RBI. The Sacred Heart junior second baseman came up with a number of clutch hits as well, going 6-8 with runners in scoring position and 7-9 with two outs.
In a dramatic come-from-behind 4-3 victory last Friday, a game in which the Pioneers trailed by two down to their last strike in their final at bat, he scored the winning run in extra innings to complete a doubleheader sweep. He bunted his way aboard with two outs, then scored on a mad dash home from first on a double to right-center by Dan Perez, diving head-first to barely avoid the catcher's tag with a great slide to the front of the plate for the game-winning walk-off run. On Saturday, in the season finale, he drove in the tying runs in the sixth inning of a 5-4 comeback win with a two-out triple to the right centerfield. He finished the regular season hitting .333 with 36 runs and 31 RBI.
Leiningen won his third NEC Rookie of the Week award, pitching his sixth complete-game victory of the season against Wagner in an 8-2 seven-inning win in the first game of the doubleheader. He struck out a season-high seven batters and scattered eight hits in allowing two runs. He finished the regular season with a 6-3 record with one save, and an ERA of 4.02 in 71.2 innings.
