(Fairfield, CT) – The Sacred Heart University Baseball team has been tabbed second in the 2012 NEC Baseball Preseason Poll, announced Wednesday afternoon by the Northeast Conference.
The Monmouth Hawks were picked to finish first. Last year, Monmouth finished the regular season first and SHU finished second, but it was the Pioneers who went on to win the NEC Championship and a birth in the Clemson Regional of the NCAA Baseball Tournament . The Pioneers closed out their NEC Title run with wins of 6-1 and 9-2 over the Hawks in the final two games of the NEC Tournament.
CCSU was selected third with the only other first place vote. Bryant, LIU Brooklyn, Mount St. Mary's, Wagner, Quinnipiac, and Fairleigh Dickenson round out the rest of the preseason poll in order.
The Pioneers seek to defend their NEC Championship by opening the season with a four-game series at the New Mexico State University, beginning on February 24. The Pioneers open up NEC play after their week-long southern trip through Florida March 5-11 with the first conference games of the season March 16-18 at home in a four-game series with CCSU.
