Bridgeport, CT- On what started out as a dreary, rainy day in Bridgeport turned into a bright and sunny day at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard for the Pioneer Baseball team in a 12-7 win over Iona.
The Pioneers starter, Nick Morrisey (Howell, NJ), cruised through three innings without giving up a run and only allowed five hits, while also striking out one. When Morrisey left the game, the Pioneers had a 1-0, which came on a Connor McEvoy (Watertown, CT) sac fly in the first inning.
The Pioneers then brought on Kevin Magoon (Quincy, MA) to pitch, and he had no problem in his first inning of work. The Pioneers scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning on an RBI from Troy Scribner (Washington Depot, CT), his first of four on the day, and an RBI single by Matt Charmello (Rossmoor, CA). The Gaels would light up the scoreboard for the first time in the top of the fifth, tying the game up 3-3. The Pioneers, however, exploded for a combined nine runs in the next two innings.
The five-run fifth inning would ultimately be enough to give Magoon the first win of his collegiate career. Dan Wertz (Cross River, NY) came in and pitched a scoreless sixth inning for his collegiate debut, also striking out two. The Gaels would score four unearned runs in the seventh, but that would be it for the Gaels' scoring in dropping their second non-conference game in two days.
The Pioneers will make the trip to Teaneck, NJ this weekend when they take on the Knights of Farleigh Dickenson University, looking to extend their five-game winning streak on Friday at 3:00 pm to begin a four-game series.
