Kerski and Phillips lead SHU Baseball to Last-Inning Win Over Bryant, 5-2

(Smithfield, RI) – Kody Kerski (Waterbury, CT) pitched a complete game and Hunter Phillips (Monroe, CT) broke a ninth-inning tie with an RBI single, as the Sacred Heart Baseball team beat the Bryant Bulldogs Sunday afternoon in the finale of a four-game series.

Phillips knocked a two-strike single to right to send home Rocco Gondek (Glastonbury, CT), who slid in safely with what proved to be the winning run.  John Murphy (Seymour, CT) added insurance with a twp-run triple to centerfield to close out the scoring.

The Bulldogs scored the game's first run in the third on an RBI single by John Mullen.  Dan Perez (Seymour, CT) tied the game his first homerun of the season, a solo shot to center, in the sixth. The Bulldogs regained the lead the next half-inning on an RBI double by Joseph Carcone, however the Pioneers once again tied it when Murphy beat out a double play in the seventh.

Kerski scattered 10 hits with one walk and six strikeouts in earning the victory.

The SHU win snapped an eight-game conference winning streak for the Bulldogs, as well as a nine-game winning streak at home.  Sacred Heart will take on Yale in New Haven on Tuesday, April 17 at 3:30 pm.
