(Staten Island, NY) – The Sacred Heart University Baseball team split a doubleheader with the Wagner Seahawks Saturday afternoon, winning 8-6 in eight innings before falling 4-2 in seven innings.
In game one, Billy McDonough (Ballston Spa, NY) broke an extra-inning tie with an RBI single to centerfield, scoring Keaton Flint (Charlton, NY) after his double to left. McDonough, who finished 2-2 with two runs and the game-winning RBI, scored later in the inning on a wild pitch.
The Seahawks forced extra innings on an Jason Gordon's RBI single in the bottom of the seventh.
After the Seahawks put a run on the board in the first, the Pioneers responded with a three-run second. Derick Horn (Valatie, NY) singled in the tying run, and Dave Boisture (Highland Mills, NY) untied it with a two-run single.
Jason Keel hit a sacrifice fly in the second, but SHU got the run back in the fifth on an RBI single to right by Hunter Phillips (Monroe, CT).
Keel doubled in another run in the fifth for Wagner, followed by a sacrifice fly by Keel. Brown drove in another in the sixth on an RBI single. However, the Pioneers responded in the seventh on RBI singles by Horn and Conor McEvoy (Watertown, CT).
Troy Scribner (Washington Depot, CT) battled through eight innings for the complete game win, giving up four earned runs.
In the second game, Wagner took a 2-0 lead in the first on a two-run homerun to right by Nick Dini. The Seahawks opened a 4-0 lead on an RBI single by Eddie Brown and a wild pitch in the third. John Murphy cut the deficit in half with a two-run single to center in the sixth, but that is as close as the Pioneers would come.
SHU looks for the series split Sunday afternoon at 1:00 pm in the finale of a four-game series at Wagner.
