Sacred Heart University Joins National Foundation for Cancer Research to "Stick it to Cancer"

Fairfield, CT –The Sacred Heart University field hockey team has joined hands with the National Foundation for Cancer Research to participate in the 3rd annual "Stick it to Cancer" campaign, in which field hockey teams across the country are invited to participate by committing to donate proceeds from at least one game to NFCR.

Sacred Heart will be donating proceeds from their game against Quinnipiac University at noon Oct. 7, 2012 to NFCR.

"We are excited to participate in Stick it to Cancer this year and do our part to help NFCR fight cancer," said Lauren Burke, Assistant Field Hockey Coach for Sacred Heart. "Almost everyone has been affected by the disease in some way, whether directly or through a loved one, and we want to do whatever we can to support the pursuit of a cure."

To raise funds, the team will be accepting general donations at the event as well as selling T-shirts to fans. The players will be wearing pink laces and tape in support of the cause.

For more information on Sacred Heart's involvement with the campaign, contact Lauren Burke at burkel5@sacredheart.edu. To find out more about "Stick it to Cancer," or to participate, visit www.nfcr.org/stickittocancer.

About the National Foundation for Cancer Research

The National Foundation for Cancer Research (NFCR) is a leading cancer research charity dedicated to funding cancer research and public education relating to cancer prevention, earlier diagnosis, better treatments and, ultimately, a cure for cancer. NFCR promotes and facilitates collaboration among scientists to accelerate the pace of discovery from bench to bedside.

Since 1973, NFCR has provided over $300 million in support of discovery-oriented cancer research focused on understanding how and why cells become cancerous, and on public education relating to cancer prevention, detection, and treatment.  NFCR's scientists are discovering cancer's molecular mysteries and translating these discoveries into therapies that hold the hope for curing cancer. NFCR is about Research for a Cure - cures for all types of cancer.  For more information, please visit www.NFCR.org.  The most convenient method to contribute to NFCR is to text "NFCR" to 20222 to make a $5 donation with the charge applied to their next cell phone bill.
