Lafayette, LA – UL-Lafayette's Caleb Adams hit three homeruns for the Ragin Cajuns in an 8-2 win over the Pioneers Saturday afternoon. Junior pitcher Nick Leiningen gave up all three blasts and took the loss for the Pioneers, giving up 7 earned runs in 4.2 innings. Sacred Heart drops to 0-2 on the young season.
Sacred Heart got another solid performance from senior shortstop John Murphy (Seymour, CT), who went 3-4 with a run scored and a run batted in. Murphy hit a homerun in the eighth inning to cut into the Ragin' Cajuns lead. Murphy has five hits in the Pioneers' first two games this season. Sacred Heart's only other run of the afternoon came on an RBI single by sophomore Keaton Flint (Charlton, NY), driving home freshman third baseman Jesus Medina (New York, NY) in the fifth inning.
Dan Wertz (Cross River, NY) and Nick Morrissey (Howell, NJ) came on in relief for the Leiningen. Wertz didn't allow a hit or run in 1.1 innings pitched, while Morrissey pitched 2 innings giving up one run on 2 hits.
Sacred Heart and UL Lafayette are right back at it tomorrow afternoon in the final game of their three game set.
