Lafayette, LA - The Sacred Heart Baseball team squandered a 3-1 eighth inning lead, allowing the UL Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns to score three runs to defeat the Pioneers, 4-3, on Sunday afternoon at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field. The Pioneers were swept in the three game series by the Ragin' Cajuns to fall to 0-3 on the season. UL Lafayette improves to an impressive 11-2 on the season.
The Pioneers got on the board first with a Dan Perez (Seymour, CT) RBI single in the first inning to score senior John Murphy (Seymour, CT). Perez also drove in the second run for the Pioneers in the third inning, this time scoring Billy McDonough (Ballston Spa, NY). Murphy was thrown out at home by right fielder Dylan Butler attempting to score from second. Kenny Byram (Ponte Vedra FL) singled in Rocco Gondek (Glastonbury, CT) in the sixth inning to make it a 3-1 Pioneers lead.
The Ragin' Cajuns were able to tie the game and take the 4-3 lead in the eighth inning. Sophomore Tyler Girouard tripled in UL-Lafayette's second run before scoring himself on a Sacred Heart error. UL Lafayette took the 4-3 lead on a sac bunt by Chase Compton to score Nick Thurman. Thurman reached on the error that scored Girouard.
The Pioneers pounded out nine hits on the afternoon led by Gondek, Perez and Murphy. All three Pioneers notched two hits apiece.
The Pioneers made two costly errors on the afternoon, one in the second inning and the other in the eighth, allowing two crucial unearned runs.
Junior Kody Kerski (Waterbury, CT) pitched five innings for the Pioneers in his first start of the season. Kerski did not let up an earned run and was in line for the win before the three run eighth inning.
Jeff Stoddard (Branford, CT) pitched three innings in relief, taking the loss for the Pioneers. Stoddard pitched well up until the eighth when he let up three runs, two charged as earned.
