Pioneers Set for Four Game Series Against Wagner
Fairfield, CT – The Sacred Heart Baseball team opens up conference play this weekend, traveling to Staten Island, New York to take on the Wagner Seahawks in a four game series. The series was originally set to be played in Bridgeport but due to unplayable field conditions the Pioneers will travel to Richmond County Bank Ballpark instead. The Sunday game however is still scheduled to be played at Harbor Yard.
Sacred Heart (3-8) is coming off a weekend in which they went 2-1 at the Frankie Frisch Invitational at Fordham University. The Pioneers defeated St. Peter's, 7-1, on Friday afternoon and then split a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon, falling to NJIT, 6-3, before smacking host Fordham, 9-1 on Sunday afternoon.
Kody Kerski (Waterbury, CT) scattered four hits, striking out five in seven scoreless innings to earn his first win of the season against St. Peter's on Friday afternoon. Kerski has an earned run average of 1.00 in 18 innings this season. Junior Nick Leiningen (Millwood, NY) earned the win on Sunday against Fordham, pitching six shutout innings, scattering just three hits. Senior Troy Scribner (Washington Depot, CT) earned a three inning save in the victory. Scribner leads the team with 17 strikeouts this season. Reigning NEC Rookie of the Week, Jesus Medina (New York, NY) shined in the two victories, going 5-7 at the plate with four RBI and four runs scored.
Senior John Murphy (Seymour, CT) leads the way at the plate for the Pioneers, batting .391 with six doubles, a triple and a homerun on the season. Senior Dan Perez (Seymour, CT) is second on the team with a .286 average.
The Wagner Seahawks come into this weekend's series with a 3-12 record. Wagner has defeated Villanova, Norfolk State, and Lafayette on the season. The Seahawks are led at the plate by junior outfielder Chris Smith who leads the team with a .313 batting average and 8 RBI. Freshman left hander Paul Mammino leads Wagner on the mound with a team leading 2.89 earned average in 18.2 innings.
