Fairfield, CT - Senior shortstop John Murphy (Seymour, CT) was named Northeast Conference Player of the Week as the Pioneers began conference play over the weekend against Wagner.
He went 5-for-12 (.417) with two home runs, a triple, five walks and seven RBI against the Seahawks' pitching staff in a series in which three games were played in Staten Island due to unplayable field conditions in Bridgeport. His two-run bomb in the first inning of the series opener set the tone for an eventual 8-1 Sacred Heart victory. Murphy's RBI triple in Game 3 of the series, a 3-1 win for the Pioneers, capped Sacred Heart's come from behind win. Murphy would go on to smack his second home run of the series and third of the season in the ninth inning of the final game of the series.
Sacred Heart is back in action on Wednesday when they host the Iona Gaels at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard.
