Bridgeport, CT - – The Sacred Heart baseball team scored three runs in the first inning and held on to defeat the Yale Bulldogs, 3-2, at Harbor Yard on Wednesday afternoon. SHU improves to 15-16 on the season.
The top three Pioneers all reached to start the game in the first inning, starting with a base hit by Keaton Flint (Charlton, NY) to lead off the game. Freshman Brian Lamboy (Manalapan, NJ) would follow Flint, getting hit by a pitch and then John Murphy (Seymour, CT) would loop one into left field for a base hit of his own to load the bases. With the bases loaded, Rocco Gondek (Glastonbury, CT) laced a hanging curveball down the left field line to clear the bases, staking the Pioneers all the runs they would need.
Yale would cut into the Pioneers' lead in the third inning with an RBI ground out by Tom O'Neill. IN the eighth inning Yale would also score a run, this time on a Joe Lubansky single to right field that scored Eric Hsieh to make the score 3-2.
Jayson Sullivan (Charlton, NY) saved the game for the Pioneers in the eighth with a sliding catch in center field with two out and two on to deny the Bulldogs of tying the game up at three.
Senior Dave Boisture (Highland Mills, NY) started the game for the Pioneers, pitching two scoreless innings to notch his first win of the season.
Jesus Medina (New York, NY) got the final four outs for the Pioneers to secure his first career save.
SHU welcomes the undefeated Bryant Bulldogs to town this weekend for a four game series at the Ballpark at Harbor yard starting Friday afternoon at 3:00 pm.
