Murphy Named ABCA Third Team All American

Fairfield, CT – Following a sensational 2013 season, the accolades just keep coming for recent Sacred Heart graduate and former SHU Shortstop John Murphy (Seymour, CT). A day after making his minor league debut with the Staten Island Yankees, Murphy was named an American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) third team All-American and made the ABCA All-Northeast First Team. Earlier this month, Murphy was selected by the New York Yankees in the sixth round of the Major League Baseball Draft.

This season, Murphy led the way offensively for a Sacred Heart team that was just one win away from a third straight NCAA Tournament appearance. On his way to being named to the Northeast Conference First team, Murphy led the Pioneers in every offensive category. The two time captain led SHU in batting (.367), slugging (.565), on base percentage (.442), RBI (47) home runs 4, triples (8), doubles (13) and hits (76) this season.

Over his four-year career, Murphy was a vital part of four Pioneer teams that went to the Northeast Conference Championship game, including winning back-to-back championships in 2011 and 2012. Murphy finished his career first all-time in the Sacred Heart history books with 170 career RBI and 17 triples, and second all-time with 264 career hits.
