Yaphank, NY – The Sacred Heart offense put together just three hits Tuesday afternoon as the UCONN Huskies defeated the Pioneers 5-0 at Baseball Heaven on Long Island. SHU falls to 3-5 on the season, while the Huskies improve to 5-8.
Freshman Jason Foley (North Bellmore, NY) pitched well in his first career start, allowing one run in 6 innings. Foley pitched five scoreless innings after allowing a UCONN run in the bottom of the first inning. Foley's 0.82 ERA in his first 11 innings ranks second on the team.
Senior Robbie Maguire (Brooklyn, NY) gave up four runs, three earned, in the seventh inning.
UCONN also had a freshman pitch well in his first career start, as Andrew Zapata allowed just one SHU hit in seven shutout innings to earn the win. The Pioneers did not register a hit until two outs in the seventh inning.
UCONN jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Vinny Siena knocked a sacrifice fly to center field to score Jack Sundberg, who led off the inning with a base hit through the left side of the infield.
The Huskies broke it open in the seventh inning with Siena delivering a monster three-run home run over the left field wall to put UCONN up 5-0.
Sacred Heart is back in action this weekend with a three-game series at Fordham. The Pioneers and Rams will play a doubleheader on Saturday and then the series finale on Sunday.
