Pioneers Lose 1-0 to Hartford in Ten Innings
Yaphank, NY – Hartford center fielder Chris DelDebbio came around to score in the top off the tenth inning to score the games only run and defeat the Sacred Heart Pioneers 1-0 Friday afternoon at Baseball Heaven on Long Island. Sacred Heart falls to 3-6 on the season.
DelDebbio led off the top off the tenth inning with a base hit up the middle, and then stole second base to get into scoring position with no outs. Next batter, Ryan Lukach also singled up the middle and after a bobble in center field, DelDebbio came around to score the game-winning run.
In a battle of the two team's top pitchers, senior Kody Kerski (Waterbury, CT) and Hartford's Sean Newcomb did not disappoint, with both aces pitching seven scoreless innings to earn no-decisions. Kerski allowed three hits and struck out five, while Newcomb yielded two hits and struck out eight.
In three starts this season, Kerski has allowed just one earned run in 18.1 innings.
Junior Nick Morrissey (Howell, NJ) came on in relief of Kerski to pitch scoreless eighth and ninth innings before giving up the unearned run in the tenth.
Sacred Heart had its chances late but could not put a run on the board. The Pioneers had runners on first and second in the bottom of the ninth but a Dan Perez (Seymour, CT) strikeout sent the game into extras. In the tenth inning, sophomore Jesus Medina (New York, NY) led off the inning with a base hit and landed on saecond base after a sacrifice bunt. With the game-tying run on second with one down, pinch hitter Victor Sorrento (Monroe Township, NJ) struck out and freshman shortstop Ted Shaw (Southington, CT) flew out to end the game.
Sacred Heart is right back it tomorrow afternoon for a doubleheader at Fordham, starting at noon.
