FAIRFIELD, CT - Junior hurler Matt Fitton (Lebanon, CT) allowed just one earned run over eight innings of work while his Sacred Heart teammates took advantage of five Fairfield University errors to give the Pioneers an 8-3 win Wednesday afternoon.
The Pioneers, now 5-8, scored two unearned runs in the top of the first thanks to three Stag errors. Mike Drowne (S. Hadley, MA) led off the game reaching on an error by the Fairfield shortstop, stole second, went to third on a passed ball, and scored on a grounder by Chris Whittemore that was misplayed by Fairfield's third baseman.
Sacred Heart made it 4-0 in the second off Fairfield starter Ryan McCullough when MJ Schifano led off the frame with a single to left and promptly stole second. He came home on an infield single to short by senior Steve Tedesco (Mission Viejo, CA). Tedesco stole second and scored from there on a Whittemore groundout to short, running with the pitch and never hesitating around third.
Fitton, 1-2, gave up seven hits, struck out four and walked three. Staked to a 5-0 lead, he allowed a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the third when an error by SHU third baseman Whittemore with two outs allowed Anthony Hajjar to follow with a two-run single.
After allowing a run in the fourth, the lefty allowed just two hits over the next four innings.
The Pioneers picked up an insurance run in the seventh on an RBI double by Murphy and another in the eighth on a single up the middle by Tedesco that scored Schifano.
Freshman Troy Scribner (Washington Depot, CT) pitched a perfect ninth to end the game.
