FAIRFIELD, CT - Senior pitcher Chris Zaccherio (Manhasset, NY) was named the Akadema Northeast Conference Pitcher of the Week today after defeating Central Connecticut 3-1 on Friday afternoon. It is the second straight week a Pioneer had captured the award. Last week, it was freshman Troy Scribner (Washington Depot, CT) taking home the prize.
Few pitchers have fared well against the heavy-hitting Blue Devils this season, and Zaccherio is one of them. The right-hander tossed a complete game nine-inning victory against Central in the opener of a four-game NEC series, throwing 120 pitches. He allowed only one run, a solo homer on the game's first pitch, to a team that averages a NEC-best 8.0 runs per contest. Facing a lineup that features four of the NEC's top-five batting average leaders, Zaccherio scattered seven hits in the 3-1 win. He struck out six batters and walked none.
Zaccherio evened his record at 3-3 with the victory. He leads the Pioneers in strikeouts this season with 42 in 46 2/3 innings.
