(Durham, NH) – Shane Gibson (Killingly, CT) recorded his first double-double of the season and Chris Evans (Stamford, CT) scored a career high 19 points, as the Sacred Heart men's Basketball team beat the University of New Hampshire Wildcats 77-59 Thursday night at Lundholm Gymnasium.
The Pioneers dominated a first half in which they shot 51.5% from the floor, while holding the Wildcats to 17.2% field goal shooting and opening up a 44-22 lead going into the locker room. Gibson dropped in 16 first half points on 7-10 shooting, helping the Pioneers build a game-high 24 points with 1:30 to play in the first.
Trailing by 24 with 11:18 to play in the second, UNH went on a 17-2 over a six-minute span. However, when Alvin Abreau hit a jumper to cut the deficit to nine, Gibson answered with a three-pointer moments later to reignite the Pioneers' offense. SHU outrebounded UNH 39-29 while also outscoring the Wildcats 34-12 in the paint, en route to outshooting them 50.0% to 31.5% for the game. The win closed out the non-conference portion of the schedule for the Pioneers, who finished 3-0 against teams from the America East and improved to 7-8 overall on the year.
The Pioneers return to conference action Thursday, January 5 at the Pitt Center when they host the defending NEC champion Long Island University Blackbirds at 7:00 p.m.
