FAIRFIELD, CT (January 23, 2011) - Sacred Heart sophomore Louis Montes (Brockton, MA) was named the Choice Hotels Northeast Conference Co-Player of the Week announced by the league on Monday. Montes, who claims his first career NEC weekly honor, shares this week's award with Velton Jones of Robert Morris.
Montes averaged 24.5 points and 9.5 rebounds in leading Sacred Heart to a pair of wins over in-state conference foes Quinnipiac and Central Connecticut last week at home. In the process of getting the Pioneers back to the .500 mark in conference action (4-4), Montes started the week off in grand fashion, dropping a career-high 28 points in a 78-75 win over the Bobcats. His career-bests didn't' stop there, either, as he recorded his first double-double of the season in the Pioneers' one-point win, 62-61, over Central Connecticut on Saturday. The Brockton, MA native netted 21 points and pulled down 14 rebounds against the Blue Devils, who were outrebounded 41-35 for the game. For the week, Montes shot 51.6% from the field and a blistering 62.5% from downtown (5-for-8).
The sophomore forward and the rest of the Pioneers will be at home for two more NEC match-ups this week, hosting Wagner on Thursday night and Mount St. Mary's on Saturday afternoon.
