Setting the Scene... The Sacred Heart Pioneers enter the final stages of non-conference play with a pair of games against teams from the Atlantic-10 Conference. The Pioneers will head to La Salle on Saturday afternoon looking to end a season-long five-game losing streak. SHU dropped a 64-59 decision to Stony Brook on Tuesday, falling to 0-3 at home in the Pitt Center this season. Senior Shane Gibson is rounding into mid-season form, posting his third-straight 20-point game with 22 points against the Seawolves. The La Salle Explorers are 7-2 after an 88-74 win at home over Iona on Thursday night. The Explorers are 4-1 at home this season with their only blemish coming in an 81-74 loss to NEC member Central Connecticut State back on November 18th.
Series Notes... Saturday will be the first meeting between SHU and La Salle.
Pioneers vs. the Atlantic-10... Sacred Heart is 0-8 against the Atlantic-10 Conference
- SHU closes non-conference play facing the league twice with road trips to La Salle and George Washington.
- The Pioneers have faced Fordham more than any other team from the league, going 0-3 against the Rams.
- SHU is 0-1 against Duquesne, UMass, Richmond, Rhode Island and Xavier.
- Sacred Heart lost at Richmond last season, 83-58, as part of the Cancun Challenge.
The Head Coaches... Dave Bike (Sacred Heart '69) begins his 35th year as the head coach of Sacred Heart University where he owns a career record of 522-486. Only Jim Boheim of Syracuse has spent more time coaching at one institution. He led the Pioneers to eight NCAA Division II tournaments and his 1985-86 team won the national championship while finishing 30-4. Bike was named the national Coach of the Year by the NABC following the title game. Dr. John Giannini (North Central '84) is in his ninth season on the bench at La Salle University. Last season, he led his Explorers to 21 wins and a NIT apperance. La Salle's all-time winningest coach in Atlantic 10 play and has produced the program's only winning A-10 records since joining the league in 1995-96. He is also the winningest coach in the University of Maine's history.
