WASHINGTON, D.C. (December 30, 2012) - Junior Louis Montes (Brockton, MA) scored a game-high 15 points but the Pioneers shot a season-low 23.7 percent (14-59) losing at George Washington University, 77-38, Sunday afternoon. The Pioneers drop their seventh-straight and end non-conference play at 2-9.
The GW Colonials (6-6) played 12 players on Sunday with all 12 scoring in the win. The Colonials shot 50.9 percent (29-57) and forced 19 SHU turnovers thanks to some stifling defense. Lasan Kromah finished with 10 points while Dwayne Smith came off the bench for 10 to lead the GW reserves who outscored the Pioneer bench 29-5 on the day.
The Pioneers kept it close early and led 8-6 on a Montes tip-in with 15:03 on the clock. SHU was within 13-10 on a Justin Swidowski (Cinnaminson, NJ) dunk at 11:42 but from there the Colonials began to pull away. GW put together a 12-0 run started by a Bryan Bynes three and capped by a Patricio Garinio dunk for a 25-10 lead at 8:18.
A Steve Glowiak (New Britain, CT) three briefly halted the run at the eight minute mark but GW would go on to close out the first half outscoring the Pioneers 16-5 to lead 41-18 at the break. The Colonial bench held a 20-2 advantage over the first 20 minutes.
The second half proved more of the same for SHU as George Washington opened the second stanza with a 14-1 run to leave no doubt, opening up a 54-19 lead with fifteen to play.
The Pioneers finished with 19 turnovers, leading to 23 GW points and were outscored 38-16 inside.
Montes just missed his third double double of the season with nine rebounds. SHU leading scorer Shane Gibson (Killingly, CT) was held to eight points on three-of-12 shooting.
The Pioneers will open the Northeast Conference schedule on Thursday night playing host to the defending champion LIU Brooklyn Blackbirds.
