Louis Montes Scores Season-High 24 As Sacred Heart Falls To Brown 85-73

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Louis Montes (Brockton, Mass.) scored a season-high 24 points Saturday as the Sacred Heart men's basketball team dropped its home opener to the Brown Bears 85-73 at the William H. Pitt Center.

Montes went 8-for-13 from the field and made five three-pointers. He also added five rebounds. Chris Evans (Stamford, Conn.) scored 23 points and added four rebounds and three steals. Evan Kelley (Norwalk, Conn.) added 14 points.

The two teams traded baskets early, with Sacred Heart (0-3) taking a 5-4 lead 2:28 into the game on a Montes three and Kelley layup. Brown (2-1) took back the lead with a Dockery Walker layup, making the score 6-5. After a Montes basket made the score 8-7, Brown went on a 12-2 run over a span of 2:47 to take a 20-9 lead with 12:01 remaining in the half. A Norman Hobbie triple capped off the Bears' run.

The Pioneers responded with a 15-2 run over the next four minutes. Evans started the run with a three, and Steve Glowiak (New Britain, Conn.) capped it off with a three-pointer that gave Sacred Heart a 24-22 lead with 8:00 to play in the first half. The Pioneers led 35-32 with 3:39 remaining in the half when Brown closed the opening period on a 6-1 run, with a Sean McGonagill layup in the final second giving the Bears a 38-36 halftime lead.

Sacred Heart took back the lead early in the second half. Evans and Kelley scored back-to-back baskets to tie the game 40-40, then Montes put in a layup to make the score 42-40 with 17:17 to play in the game. The Pioneers led 47-46 with 14:59 left in the second when Brown scored seven straight points to take a 53-47 lead. Sacred Heart closed to within three with 12:32 left on an Evans free throw, but that was as close as the Pioneers would get. Brown went on a 13-5 run over the next 4:09, capped off by a McGonagill layup, to take a 66-55 lead with 8:23 to go. Sacred Heart was within five points twice in the last eight minutes, but Brown tacked on free throws at the end to win 85-73

Brown shot 55.9% in the game to Sacred Heart's 48.1% and outrebounded the Pioneers 32-22. The Pioneers did force 18 Brown turnovers and turned them into 25 points. McGonagill led all players with 23 points as five Brown players scored in double-figures Saturday.

Sacred Heart will face another Ivy League opponent on Tuesday, Nov. 19 when the Pioneers travel to Yale for a 7:00 p.m. game in New Haven.
