Men’s Basketball Drops Second Straight Game at Lehigh 76-64
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Sacred Heart men's basketball team fell behind early against Lehigh Sunday at Stabler Arena and couldn't recover, losing 76-64 to the Mountain Hawks.
Steve Glowiak (New Britain, Conn.) led the Pioneers with 17 points off the bench, making five three-pointers in the game. He also tied a career-high with six assists. Chris Evans (Stamford, Conn.) had 14 points, going 8-for-10 at the free throw line. Phil Gaetano (Wallingford, Conn.) scored in double figures for the third straight game. Gaetano made four threes for 12 points and dished out a season-high eight assists.
Lehigh (2-5) opened the game on an 11-2 run in the first 3:28, getting seven points from Jesse Chuku. The Mountain Hawks took a 14-2 lead on a Corey Schaefer three-pointer before Phil Gaetano knocked in a three of his own to get Sacred Heart (1-5) back within nine, 14-5, with 15:14 remaining in the half. The Pioneers cut the deficit to eight with 12:10 to play when Steve Glowiak made his first three of the game, making the score 17-9. Glowiak's triple started an 8-0 Sacred Heart run, which Glowiak capped off with a layup at the 9:51 mark to get the Pioneers within three at 17-14.
The Mountain Hawks then went on another big run. A Chuku layup sparked a 9-0 Lehigh run, as Schaefer and Mackey McKnight also scored in the spurt that gave Lehigh a 26-14 lead with 7:40 remaining in the first half. Gaetano and Evans got the Pioneers back in the game, combining for nine points to get Sacred Heart within seven, 30-23, with 5:53 to play in the first. Cole Walton (Bellevue, Wash.) then put in a layup to get the Pioneers within five, 30-25, at the 4:59 mark. Then the Pioneers went cold from the field, making just one basket for the remainder of the half. Lehigh ended the half on an 18-2 run, capped off by a McKnight three with one second left to take a 48-27 lead.
After Lehigh took its largest lead of the game early in the second half, 60-33, the Pioneers went on an 11-2 run. Gaetano made two threes in the spurt, as a Glowiak triple and a pair of Evans free throws cut the Mountain Hawks' lead to 62-44 with 12:19 to play. Sacred Heart kept the deficit at 18 on two more Glowiak threes to make the score 70-52 with 7:29 remaining. The Pioneers got as close as 13 with 2:31 to play as Glowiak's fourth three of the half and an Evan Kelley (Norwalk, Conn.) layup made the score 74-61. Kelley also put in a layup in the final minute to make the final score 76-64.
Sacred Heart shot 41.9% from the field as the Mountain Hawks shot 54.9%. The Pioneers made nine three-pointers and shot 45% from the three-point arc. Sacred Heart had 20 assists to 15 turnovers, forcing 14 Lehigh turnovers. Chuku led all scorers with 26 points and 15 rebounds. McKnight also had a double-double of 11 points and 11 assists.
The Pioneers close their current stretch of five consecutive road games on Wednesday, Dec. 4 with a 7 p.m. game at Hofstra.
