Men's Basketball Wraps Up Road Swing At Hofstra Wednesday Night

Setting the Scene...  The Sacred Heart men's basketball team wraps up its current five-game road swing Wednesday night at Hofstra. The two teams are meeting for the first time since 1974.

Last Time Out... Sacred Heart fell behind 14-2 at Lehigh on Sunday, leading by as much as 27 in the second half before winning 76-64. The Mountain Hawks shot 54.9% from the field, holding the Pioneers to 41.5%. Steve Glowiak led the Pioneers with 17 points off the bench, making five three-pointers. He also had six assists. Three other Sacred Heart players scored in double-figures. Chris Evans had 14 points on Sunday. Phil Gaetano added 12 point and eight assists. Evan Kelley scored 10 points with five rebounds. 

Hofstra Series Notes...  The Pride leads the overall series 4-1.
- First Meeting: Dec. 16, 1969 at Sacred Heart - Hofstra won 84-68.
- Sacred Heart beat Hofstra 82-78 at Sacred Heart on Jan. 8, 1972. 
- The two teams met every season from 1969 to 1974. Hofstra's average margin of victory in the series is six points per game. 

That Gaetano is Scoring... Junior guard Phil Gaetano scored in double figures for the third straight game on Sunday, making four threes for 12 points at Lehigh. He set a new career-high in scoring at Boston College, putting in 16 points as he made four three-pointers. Over the last three games, Gaetano is shooting 52.4% from the field and 58.8% from the three-point arc. He also has a 2.6 assist-to-turnover ratio in the last three games with 18 assists. Gaetano is second in the NEC in three-point shooting at 48.1%. 

Glowiak From Three... Steve Glowiak made five three-pointers Sunday at Lehigh as he led Sacred Heart with 17 points. He also had six assists, tying a career-high. Glowiak also scored in double figures at Boston College, putting up 15 points and seven rebounds in the overtime loss to the Eagles. He is currently seventh in the NEC in three-point field goal percentage at 44.7%. 

Evans Toes The Line... Chris Evans has shot 44% from the field over the last three games and has scored in double figures in five of the last six games. He scored 14 points on Sunday at Lehigh and had 18 points at Boston College on Nov. 26. Evans has scored almost half of his points at the free throw line this season. The redshirt-junior has 98 points so far this year, with 46 of them coming at the foul line. Evans is 46-for-57 at the free throw line, with his free throw percentage of 80.7% putting him sixth in the NEC. He has made and attempted the most free throws of any player in the conference.

Forcing Turnovers... The Pioneers are forcing an average of 15.7 turnovers a game this season, leading to a turnover margin of +1.1. Sacred Heart is averaging 17.7 points off turnovers this season, scoring 19 points off 14 Lehigh turnovers on Sunday. On Nov. 16, the Pioneers scored a season-high 25 points off turnovers against Brown.

Scouting Hofstra... Picked to finish ninth in the Preseason CAA poll, the Pride enters Wednesday night's game with a 2-5 record after a 66-59 loss to Manhattan on Saturday. Hofstra led 30-27 at halftime, but the Jaspers shot 53.8% from the field to take the lead in the second half to win by seven. Zeke Upshaw led the Pirde with 21 points as Darren Payen added 10 points off the bench. Hofstra's two wins this season have come against Fairleigh Dickinson 80-58 and against Hartford 81-78. The Pride is averaging 73.0 points per game in Joe Mihalich's first season in Hempstead after serving as Niagara's head coach for 15 seasons.
