Setting the Scene... In game three of the Continental Tires Las Vegas Classic, the Sacred Heart Pioneers will take on the Radford Highlanders at the Orleans Arena Sunday afternoon. Sacred Heart and Radford are both 0-2 thus far in the Classic with both teams losing at Santa Clara and at UNLV. Most recently, the Pioneers were defeated by UNLV 82-50 Friday night in game two of the Classic. Sacred Heart is in the midst of a four-game losing streak, while Radford (6-4) won back-to-back games before coming out west.
The Field...The Continental Tires Las Vegas Classic field includes Santa Clara of the West Coast Conference, UNLV of the Mountain West Conference Mississippi State of the Southeastern Conference, South Florida of the American Athletic Conference, Florida A&M University (Tallahassee, FL), Radford University (VA), and Florida Gulf Coast University.
Last Time Out... The Pioneers scored their lowest point total of the season in a 82-50 loss at UNLV Friday night. Redshirt junior Evan Kelley scored a team-high 14 points, while Chris Evans added ten points. Sacred Heart shot a dismal 35.9 (23-of-64) percent from the field. The Pioneers were outrebounded 53-34, including 16-8 on the offensive boards. The Running Rebels used a 19-0 first half to seize control of the game and runaway from SHU.
SHU vs Radford Series Notes... This will be the first-ever meeting between the Highlanders and Pioneers. Sacred Heart has never faced an opponent out of the Big South Conference.
Scouting the Highlanders... Picked to finish third in the North Division of the Big South Conference (behind Liberty & High Point), Radford comes into this afternoon's game with a record of 6-4. The Highlanders are led by Head Coach Mike Jones in his third season. Previous to Radford, Jones served as an assistant coach at VCU under Head Coach Shaka Smart. Junior forward Javonte Green leads the way for Radford, averaging 15.9 points per game to go along with 6.2 rebounds per game. Green has scored in double digits in nine consecutive games. Last season, Radford finished 13-19, 7-9 in the Big South Conference.
West Coast Offense... Sacred Heart has struggled offensively in its first two games of the Continental Tires Las Vegas Classic. The Pioneers have scored 111 points in their two losses, including a season-low 50 points against UNLV Friday night. Sacred Heart is shooting 38.8 percent (45-116) from the field so far in ths tournament. In Sacred Heart's first ten games, they averaged 75.0 points per game.

Barnett Burstin' Thru... Freshman De'Von Barnett was named NEC Rookie of the Week two weeks ago after playing his first two games in a SHU uniform. In Barnett's debut game, a 73-59 win over Hofstra on December 4th, the 6'4'' wing put in 8 points on 4-6 shooting. Barnett has followed that up with three more solid games, averaging 9.0 points per game in his first four contests. Barnett missed Sacred Heart's first seven games due to an injury and also did not play against UNLV due to an ankle injury.
Montes 1,000.... Senior Louis Montes scored his 1,000th career points on Wednesday night in the Pioneers 70-61 loss to Santa Clara. The senior forward now has 1,008 career points in 102 career games. Montes becomes the 37th Pioneer to eclipse 1,000 points in a career and the 190th player in Northeast Conference history. Montes also has 531 career rebounds.
Consistent Chris... Redshirt Junior Chris Evans has scored in double digits in seven consective games, and ten of his last 11. The Connecticut native scored a season high 23 points (Career-high - 24 pts) against Brown on November 16th. Evans is currently second on the team, averaging 13.8 points per game. Both Kelley and Evans have scored in double digits a team-high 10 times.
Kelley Back on Track... Following a 2 for 12 shooting performance in the Pioneers' overtime loss to Boston College, Evan Kelley has put in double digit points in the past five games games. Most recently, the Connecticut native scored in a team-high 14 points against UNLV Kelley is the Pioneers' top scorer, averaging 15.2 points per game. He is seventh in the NEC in scoring and 9th in field goal percentage (.477). Kelley scored a career-high 32 points in Sacred Heart's 122-118 double-overtime loss at Holy Cross on Nov. 13.
Up Next... Sacred Heart will play either Florida Gulf Coast of Florida A&M on Monday afternoon in its final game of the Continental Tires Las Vegas Classic.
