Setting the Scene... With 2013 in the rear-view, the Sacred Heart men's basketball team begins the new year with a trip to New Hampshire to take on the UNH Wildcats at Lundholm Gym Saturday afternoon. Sacred Heart is looking to snap a six game losing streak after dropping all four games on a west coast trip that included match-ups with Santa Clara, UNLV, Radford and Florida A&M. The Pioneers will take on a New Hampshire team that has lost ten consecutive games after starting the season 2-0. The Wildcats have not been victorious since they defeated Duquesne on November 13th.
Last Time Out... The Pioneers shot 35.5 percent from the field in a 75-70 loss to Florida A&M in the final game of the Continental Tire Las Vegas Classic at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas. Junior Steve Glowiak (New Britain, CT) led Sacred Heart in scoring, putting in 19 points on 6-of-17 shooting, while Chris Evans (Stamford, CT) added 18, going 12-15 from the free throw line. Off the bench, freshman De'Von Barnett (Waldorf, MD) scored a career-high 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting. Junior point guard Phil Gaetano (Wallingford) added a couple three-pointers and dished out 10 assists.
SHU vs New Hampshire Series Notes... Sacred Heart has won both meetings between the Pioneers and Wildcats, in 2010 and 2011.
- In 2011, the Pioneers defeated New Hampshire 77-59 in Durham. Chris Evans and Evan Kelley combined for 28 points for the Pioneers.
Scouting the Wildcats... Like the Pioneers, the New Hampshire Wildcats come into this afternoon's match-up in need of a victory after dropping ten straight. UNH defeated Suffolk and Duquesne to open the season but have struggled ever since, losing ten straight games by an average of 11.6 points per contest. New Hampshire is 0-1 in the America East after dropping their conference opener, 62-48, to the Stony Brook Seawolves on December 15th. UNH is led by Patrick Konan who is averaging 12.2 points per game to go along with 5.6 boards per game, both team-highs. The Wildcats rank 8th in scoring offense in the America East Conference, averaging 60.2 points per game.
West Coast Not the Best Coast... In the the Pioneers' 0-for-4 west coast trip as part of the Continental Tire Las Vegas Classic, they shot a dismal 39.2 % from the floor, including 29.9 percent from beyond the three-point line. Averaging just over 70 points per game (70.25) in the four games, Sacred Heart was beaten by an average of 15.5 points per game.

Barnett Burstin' Thru... Since missing the Pioneers first seven games with a knee injury, freshman De'Von Barnett has been a much needed spark for Sacred Heart. Barnett is averaging 9.2 points per game in his first six, including a career-high 14 in the Pioneers' last game against Florida A&M. The Maryland native was named Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week on December 9th after notching back-to-back eight point outings against Hofstra and Lafayette.
Up Next... Sacred Heart will begin conference play with a home match-up against the Colonials of Robert Morris on January 9th. SHU is 105-152 in conference play since joining the league in 1999-2000.
