FAIRFIELD, Conn – Sacred Heart junior point guard Phil Gaetano (Wallingford, CT) was named as one of six Northeast Conference Scholar-Athletes for the winter season Wednesday afternoon. Gaetano, a Business Administration major, finished the winter semester with a 3.77 grade point average. It is the second consecutive season that Gaetano was named the NEC Men's Basketball Scholar-Athlete.
On the court, Gaetano started all of Sacred Heart's 31 games this season. The Connecticut-native averaged 6.3 assists per game, which ranked second in the NEC and tenth in the country. It was the second straight year the point guard finished in the top ten nationally in assists per game. Gaetano will enter his senior season with 545 career assists, the most by a Pioneer in Sacred Heart's Division I era.
Along with the scholar-athletes, the NEC also announced its Student-Athlete Winter Academic Honor Roll and the Commissioner's Honor Roll. The Academic Honor Roll is comprised of student-athletes who accumulated a grade point average of 3.2 or greater in the winter, while the Commissioner's Honor Roll honors those with a 3.75 GPA or higher. Sacred Heart had 43 student-athletes represented on the Academic Honor Roll, and 11 of those honored on the Commissioner's Honor Roll. Check out the full NEC release and the honor rolls below:
