Assistant Johnny Kidd is in his 17th season as a member of the Sacred Heart men's basketball coaching staff. His first season with the Pioneers was SHU's first in the Northeast Conference, as well as on the Division I level in 1999-00. In total, Kidd is a 22-year veteran of the college coaching ranks. Prior to coming to Sacred Heart, he spent four years at Western Connecticut State before two seasons as an assistant coach on the Central Connecticut State University staff.
Kidd is heavily involved with implementing defensive strategies and guard skills for the Pioneers. He has helped build a recruiting base that has produced eight Pioneers who have garnerned All-Northeast Conference honors and five All-NEC Rookie selections. Since his arrival at SHU, the Pioneers have made seven Northeast Conference Tournament appearances, including two trips to the NEC Championship game (2007, 2008).
A 1993 graduate of Central Connecticut State, Kidd was a four-year starter and two-time captain for the Blue Devils. A point guard during his heyday, he holds the Central Connecticut career assist record with 567. He reachd his single-game peak with 16 assists against Sacred Heart, sparking CCSU to a 90-72 win over the Pioneers during the 1992-93 season.
