Men's Hoop at Hartford Hawks Tonight

Setting The Scene: The Sacred Heart men’s basketball team looks to win its third straight game Friday night when it travels to take on the Hartford Hawks at 7 PM. SHU is coming off an 81-73 win over Monmouth on Saturday.

Series: This is the 16th all-time meeting between the two schools, dating back to 1970. Sacred Heart holds a 9-6 edge in the series, but Hartford has won each of the last two years. The teams hadn’t met prior to that since the 2000-01 season when the Hawks won a 69-58 decision.

Sacred Heart vs. America East: Sacred Heart is 32-27 all-time against schools currently in America East. The Pioneers have faced Albany (8-5), Binghamton (1-1), Hartford (9-6), Maine (0-3), Stony Brook (12-4), UMBC (2-7) and Vermont (0-2). SHU has never faced New Hampshire.

Scouting the Opponent: Hartford has dropped six straight games and has a 2-8 record. Their most recent setback was a 63-60 decision to St. Francis (NY) of the NEC.

Senior Joe Zeglinski leads the team in scoring at 14.7 points points per game. He is also the top three-point threat with 33 treys on the season. Junior Morgan Sabia is second in scoring at 13.5 points per game and has hit 26 three’s at a 49 percent clip. Joel Barkers is the top rebounder at 5.6 per game.

This Date in SHU Men’s Basketball History: On December 11, 1985, on the way to a National Championship and a 30-4 record, the Pioneers defeated Stonehill 68-63. It was the sixth straight win for the Pioneers to open the season. Kevin Stevens led the Pioneers with 17 points and five rebounds. Roger Younger and Keith Johnson chipped in 13 points apiece for the Pioneers, who ahot 54 percent from the floor.
