FAIRFIELD, CT (March 5, 2012) - Sacred Heart University's ninth ranked Men's Fencing team qualified the maximum number of fencers for the NCAA Regionals to be held on Sunday, March 11 at Boston College.
Qualifiers include in foil team are captain Stuart Holmes (Centereach, NY), Andrew Holmes (Centereach, NY) and Jonathan Jacovino (Brownfield, ME), in epee 2011 All-American Justin Dion (N. Attleboro, MA), Mike Fenech (Prescott, AZ) and Jeremiah German (Pittsburgh, PA), and in saber 2011 All-American Marty Williams (Plainfield, NJ), Tom Gerrity (East Setauket, NY), CJ Fleck (Sicklerville, NJ) and Peter Freiss (Stony Brook, NY).
"We once again have a great opportunity to get multiple fencers to advance to the NCAA Championship round at Ohio State", said head coach Dr. Thomas Vrabel. "Justin Dion qualified second in the region in epee and Marty Williams fifth in saber. These are fantastic accomplishments for them. Stuart Holmes, Andrew Holmes, Jon Jacovino, and Mike Fenech also have excellent chances to move on with top eight finishes at Regionals. Most of our guys are peaking right now, so I really like our chances to send four or five fencers to Columbus".
On the strength of their dominating performances at the NIEFC Tournament and the National Collegiate Squad Championships, Andrew Holmes was named College Fencing 360's Male Rookie of the Week and Stuart Holmes was recognized as a CF 360 Prime Time Player. This is the first time that a Pioneer fencer has been named the national Rookie of the Week.
"I am very happy to see that Andrew and Stuart have been recognized nationally for their excellent performances last weekend." comments Dr. Vrabel. "They have now moved in to the elite level of college foil fencers. This is a great accomplishment for them and we are all very proud of what they have done". Earlier this season Marty Williams and Mike Fenech were also recognized by College Fencing 360 as Prime Time Players.
