FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Senior team captain Stuart Holmes was named the ECAC Medal of Merit Recipient for Men's Athletics at the 2013 Pioneer All Sports Banquet last Sunday. In addition to this prestigious honor, Holmes was named to the Men's All-Pioneer Team, was a recipient of the Dr. Gary Rose ECAC Scholar Athlete Award and became a member of the C. Donald Cook Scholar Athlete Society. Holmes was joined on the All-Pioneer Team by his brother Andrew Holmes and by 2013-14 team captain Kevin Almerini and freshman Alexander Harwood. Kevin Almerini also received the Coach's Award for Excellence.
"It is a very special honor to have Stuart Holmes win the ECAC Medal of Merit", said head coach Dr. Thomas Vrabel. "The recognition received by fencers at the Gala, the championship rings and banners received in recognition of our NFC championships and the creation of our new Fencing Suite in the Pitt Athletic Center show the level of commitment and support that Sacred Heart Athletics has for fencing. I know that the team will work even harder next season to again make the top ten in the NCAA Rankings."
"I am so pleased to see Stuart Holmes' career at SHU culminate in this manner", said Dr. Vrabel. "He came to Pioneer Fencing on paper as the fifth-strongest foil recruit that fall. His hard work and eagerness to be coached earned him a starting spot that season and a second team All NFC performance. The rest (2013 NFC Fencer of the Year, three-time all NFC First Team, and two trips to the NCAA Championships), as they say, is history. We are very fortunate that Stuart will be with the program as a graduate assistant coach while he works on his MBA ."
