FAIRFIELD, CT (August 23, 2013) - We wrap up our preseason preview of the 2013 Sacred Heart Pioneers with a look at the special teams units. Assistant coach and special teams coordinator Darin Edwards talks with us about the Pioneer kicking and return game.
Part IX - Special Teams
Special Teams can often swing a game and be the difference between a win and a loss. In 2013 the Pioneers will have a blend of youth and experience leading their special teams units. Senior Chris Rogers (Cazenovia, NY) will open the season as the team's place kicker. Rogers was six of 11 on his field goal attempts last fall. In 2011, Rogers led all Pioneers with 63 points on the year, making all 11 of his field goal attempts. He was named to the All-Northeast Conference team and also garnered All-New England honors.
Handling punting and kick-off duties this season will be freshman Alec Finney (Reading, PA). Finney has a strong leg and takes over punting duties from graduate Rob Shepherd, a three-year starter.
In the return game, sophomore wide receiver Tyler Dube (Southington, CT) will once again handle punt return duties. Dube handled 19 punts last season for 118 yards (6.2 ypr) and had a long return of 29 yards.
On Monday we will begin our weekly coach's shows with a sitdown with head coach Mark Nofri as the Pioneers get ready for their season opener at Marist on August 31st.
