SHU Football Snags Three NEC Weekly Awards
Fairfield, CT (September 10, 2013) – RJ Noel (Lowell, MA), Stephan Thomas (Egg Harbor Township, NJ) and Alec Finney (Reading, PA) of the Sacred Heart football team were all honored with Northeast Conference weekly awards after Sacred Heart's exciting 26-24 win over Lafayette over the weekend.
Noel was named NEC Co-Rookie of the Week for the second consecutive week. The rookie signal caller completed 17 of 26 passes for 156 yards and a touchdown, while accumulating 121 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Noel came up big in crunch time, leading the Pioneers down the field with 2 minutes left in the game for a game-winning field goal as time expired. Noel had a few timely completions to junior wide receiver Tyler Dube (Southington, CT) on the final drive.
After intercepting two balls and forcing a fumble against Lafayette, junior defensive back Stephan Thomas was named NEC Defensive Player of the Week. The junior defensive back made two great plays while defending preseason All-Patriot League receiver Mark Ross, rising up and taking two balls away from him. Thomas leads the Pioneers with 15 tackles, 2 interceptions, a forced fumble and 3 pass break-ups.
Freshman punter/kicker Alec Finney was named NEC Special Teams Player of the Week after drilling a 42-yard field goal as time expired to defeat Lafayette, 26-24, Saturday night. The clutch kick was the first make of his career.
