Pioneers and Chowan Clash on Homecoming Weekend

Setting the Scene... The 3-0 Sacred Heart Pioneers welcome the Chowan Hawks to Campus field as SHU celebrates Homecoming Weekend on campus. The Pioneers are looking to go 4-0 for the first time since 2008, while Chowan looks to climb over .500 for the first time this season. This is the first time these schools have ever met for a football game. Chowan is in the same division as the Pioneers' last foe, the Lincoln Lions.
Series Notes... This is the first meeting between SHU and Chowan on the gridiron. Chowan is in the same conference as Sacred Heart's last opponent Lincoln.
Last Time Out... Sacred heart scored on their first four possessions on their way to a 45-3 runaway victory over the Lincoln Lions in their home opener on Campus Field Saturday night. Junior running back Sean Bell ran for 205 yards on 18 carries, becoming just the ninth Pioneer to ever run for over 200 yards in a game. Quarterback R.J Noel threw two touchdowns and added another one on the ground. On the defensive side of the ball, the Pioneers had four sacks and 17 tackles for loss.
The Head Coaches... The Pioneers will be led by second year head coach Mark Nofri in 2013. Beginning his 20th season as a member of the Pioneers coaching staff, Nofri is the longest tenured coach in Sacred Heart program history. The Pioneers were 2-9 last season with Nofri serving as the interim head coach. Nofri is also the long time linebackers coach for the Pioneers, turning out several All-Conference and All-American linebackers including Jayson Jarrett '01, Kayode Mayowa '02, Craig Capurso '02, Jon Corto '06 and Chris Mandas '11. Tim Place is in his 5th season as the head coach of the Chowan Hawks. Last season, Place guided Chowan to their first winning season (6-4) since 1999. Before Chowan, Place was the head coach at Urbana University in Ohio for six years.
Scouting the Hawks… Chowan is 1-1 so far this season after dropping their opener to the University of North Carolina-Charlotte and then defeating Alderson Broaddus University, 60-39 this past Saturday. Chowan has showed a balanced attack this season, averaging 287.5 passing yards a game and 134.5 rushing yards per contest. Last week, junior quarterback Cameron Stover led the way against Alderson Broaddus, completing 26 of 37 passes for 332 yards and five touchdowns. Stover completed passes to ten different wide receivers. On the ground, the Hawks rushed for 274 yards with 8 different players getting a carry.
Up Next... Sacred Heart hits the road next Saturday to take on the Bucknell Bison in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania. Bucknell is in action at Cornell on Friday. The Bison beat Marist 27-14 in their season-opener September 7th.
