Fairfield. CT – Junior defensive back J.D. Roussel (Pawtucket, RI) was named Northeast Conference Defensive Player of the Week. The corner back becomes the 5th Pioneer to win a NEC weekly award this season.
Roussel tied a program record in snagging three interceptions in the Pioneers' 16-0 victory over Bucknell on Saturday night. He became the first pioneer to do it at the Division I level and the first player to do it since 1994. Roussel's first two interceptions ended promising Bucknell drives, while the final pick-off led to SHU kneeling the game away. Sacred Heart is 5-0 for this first time since 2008.
As a whole, the SHU defense forced six turnovers (four interceptions, two fumbles) and racked up seven sacks in the victory over Bucknell. The 16-0 win was the first Sacred Heart shutout since 2002.
Roussel and the Pioneers open Northeast Conference play this week as they play host to the defending NEC Champions, the Wagner Seahawks.
