Somerset, NJ – The Northeast Conference (NEC) announced the Sacred Heart Football and Women's Volleyball teams as the winners of the 2014 NEC Spring Team Sportsmanship Award for their respective sports Tuesday afternoon.
The sportsmanship awards, instituted by league Presidents in 2008, are designed to acknowledge the team in each conference sport that, in the opinion of its peers, most closely demonstrates good sportsmanship based on the NEC Principles of Sportsmanship and Standards of Conduct. Voting is conducted at the conclusion of each season by each team and head coach, who rank teams within the conference based on a set of criteria.
"The NEC Council of Presidents are fully committed to the values of good sportsmanship and competing with integrity," said Noreen Morris, NEC Commissioner. "On the Council's behalf, I'm proud to congratulate the coaches and student-athletes from these five institutions for being recognized by their peers as the teams that best epitomized those values."
The 2013 football team won the Northeast Conference Championship and earned the program's first ever berth into the FCS Playoffs. The volleyball team found their way back into the NEC Tournament but lost to the eventual champions, LIU Brooklyn, in the semi-finals.
