Sacred Heart University football senior Troy Moore (Worcester, Mass.) has been named to the 2014 Buck Buchanan Award Watch List, announced Thursday morning by The Sports Network. The Buchanan award is presented to the outstanding defensive player at the NCAA Division I FCS level. Moore is one of 20 student-athletes on the initial watch list and one of only two defensive tackles.
Moore, who already picked up TSN FCS Preseason All-America First Team accolades this month, finished the Pioneers 2013 championship run with 63 tackles, including a team-best 8.5 sacks. The 2013 NEC Defensive Player of the Year, and Third-Team TSN All-America honoree, finished second on the roster with 16.5 tackles for loss, helping the Pioneers to a nation leading 120 TFL on the season. Moore was named the NEC Defensive Player of the Week after a three sack, six tackle for loss effort in the Pioneers win over Bryant, one of three games in which he recorded eight or more tackles. Moore, a graduate of Bridgton Academy, was also named All-New England by the New England Football Writers Association.
Moore led Sacred Heart to a 10-3 record last fall as the Pioneers captured their first-ever NEC Football Championship and advanced to the FCS Playoffs for the first time. In addition to numerous athletic honors, the Pioneers were recognized by the NEC head coaches with the league's Football Sportsmanship Award.
Sacred Heart begins the 2014 campaign on August 30, versus Marist, under the lights – the first of four consecutive home games to open the year. The Pioneers begin their NEC title defense on October 11 with a home game versus Robert Morris.
