FAIRFIELD, Conn. (March 17, 2010) - Sacred Heart head coach Paul Gorham and the Pioneers announced their 11-game schedule for the 2010 season on Wednesday afternoon. The 2010 season marks the Pioneers 20th season of competition and will feature first-ever meetings with Dartmouth and Georgetown.
For the second-straight season the Pioneers will open up against the Marist Red Foxes. SHU will make the trip to Poughkeepsie to kick-off the season under the lights with a 7:00 pm match-up on September 3rd. The two teams have met every season since the 2002 campaign with the all-time series tied at 4-4. The Red Foxes posted a 31-12 win on Campus Field last fall.
The Pioneers will open play on their 13th season in the Northeast Conference on Saturday, September 11th playing host to the Robert Morris Colonials. The 2010 season will mark the first time the NEC champion will receive an automatic bid to the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) tournament. The Sacred Heart / Robert Morris series is tied 6-6 after a 9-7 loss on the road to the Colonials last season. SHU follows with a week three trip to Loretto, Pennsylvania to face the Saint Francis (PA) Red Flash. The Pioneers beat SFPA last season 29-7 and lead the series 9-5.
The month of September will close with a trip to Hanover, New Hampshire to take on the Dartmouth Big Green. For the first time in program history, the Pioneers will face an opponent from the Ivy League as they meet Dartmouth on Memorial Field on Saturday, September 25th. The Big Green finished 2-8 last season.
Saturday, October 2nd bring a match-up with defending Northeast Conference Champion Central Connecticut State on Campus Field, the highlight of Sacred Heart 2010 Homecoming Weekend. The instate rivals are scheduled for a 1:00 pm kick-off as the Pioneers look to snap a six-game losing streak to the Blue Devils.
Sacred Heart will hit the road for back-to-back NEC road games on Saturday, October 9th at Bryant and Saturday, October 16th at Duquesne. The Pioneers and Bulldogs meet last fall for the first time since the 2000 season, a 19-13 Sacred Heart win on Campus Field. SHU dealt Bryant a 24-14 loss on Campus Field last year as they head to Rhode Island for the first time to face the Bulldogs. The Pioneers closed last season in heartbreaking fashion as the Dukes handed SHU a 45-42 loss at home on a field goal with no time remaining.
The Georgetown Hoyas of the Patriot League will pay a visit to Fairfield on Saturday, October 23rd. The Pioneers first-ever match-up with the Hoyas will kick-off at 1:00 pm as part of Sacred Heart Family Weekend at the University. The Hoyas are coming off a winless 2009 campaign, finishing 0-11. SHU will close out the month of October with a road trip to NEC foe Monmouth University on October 30th. The Pioneers have lost seven-straight to the Hawks.
The 2010 season will conclude with a pair of November home dates against NEC competition in Albany and Wagner. The four-time NEC Champion Great Danes will come to Campus Field on Saturday, November 6th for a 1:00 pm kick-off. The Great Danes lead the all-time series with SHU, 10-2, and have won eight-straight over the Pioneers. The Wagner Seahawks will visit Fairfield in the season finale on Saturday, November 20th at 1:00 pm.
