Pioneer Football Opens 2009 Training Camp

FAIRFIELD, Conn. (August 12, 2009) - The countdown to kick-off of the 2009 Sacred Heart football season is officially underway as the Pioneers opened up their sixth training camp under head coach Paul Gorham this week. The season will open up on Saturday, September 5th as the Pioneers play host to the Marist Red Foxes at 6 pm on Campus Field.

The 2009 season will be the Pioneers 12th year of competition in the Northeast Conference after posting an 8-3 record last fall. The Pioneers posted their best record under coach Gorham and their highest win total since the perfect 11-0 2001 campaign last year.

The 2009 Pioneers return nine starters on offense and seven starters on the defensive side of the ball as they returned to Campus Field to open training camp on Monday morning. Six Pioneers who earned All-NEC honors last fall return to the Sacred Heart line-up led by the program's all-time leading receiver, senior Steve Tedesco (Mission Viejo, CA). Tedesco and r-junior Dale Fink (Swansea, IL), a two-year as the Pioneer's starting signal caller, make up one of the top-passing/receiving combos in the NEC. On the offensive line, All-NEC center Justin Smith (Binghamton, NY) will anchor a unit that returns four starters looking to open holes for sophomore running back Garry Coles (Southington, CT) will look to step into a starting role in the backfield this season.

Defensively, the Pioneers will be led up front by senior defensive end Bill O'Brien (Lafayette, NY) and in the backfield by senior corner back Andre Isla (Brookhaven, NY), both All-NEC players in 2008.

After facing the Red Foxes in the season opener, the Pioneers will hit the road for the rest of the month of September, traveling to Holy Cross, Albany and Central Connecticut. The Pioneers match-up with the Blue Devils will be televised live on MSG-Plus and Fox College Sports. The Pioneers will host the Monmouth Hawks on October 17th for "SHU Family Weekend" and the Bryant Bulldogs on November 7th on "2009 Homecoming Weekend".
